DBTA:A Look at Upcoming Enhancements in SQL Server 2008 R2

At a rather muted Microsoft TechEd in Los Angeles in May, the crowds were diminished and the educational content was slimmed down. In the past, SQL Server sessions were so abundant that you'd have trouble choosing which of several you might want to attend. This year, the state of the economy was reflected in many ways, including the one, or, in just a few cases, two sessions per time slot allotted SQL Server professionals. Despite the low ebb, the Microsoft SQL Server team made an exciting announcement about the upcoming availability of the SQL Server 2008 R2 CTP (Community Technology … [Read more...]

DBTA: The Future of Coding for SQL Server, Part 2

In my last column (published in the February e-edition and the March print edition of DBTA), I reviewed the overall coding landscape for SQL Server with special focus on LINQ to SQL, a new technology introduced by Microsoft in late 2008. LINQ to SQL promised to make developers' lives much easier by allowing them to focus on writing programs in their favorite Visual Studio language and letting LINQ to SQL write all the Transact-SQL code. The problem is that LINQ to SQL writes very bad Transact-SQL code. [READ MORE] … [Read more...]

A Community Divided

Cross posted from Joe Webb's blog. People have been screaming from rooftops for a month now about the PASS election process, ever since a beloved member of our SQL Server community was shunned in his bid to run for the PASS Board of Directors. The community has reacted vocally. PASS has reacted defensively. And unfortunately much of the back and forth has been speaking “at” each other rather than “with” each other. Watching this has been almost as bad as watching someone burn bacon! Almost. Kevin Kline (blog, twitter) has asked a number of leaders in the community to … [Read more...]

See You in St Louis, and then London, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Stockholm, and York, UK

Good grief, there's a lot of travel in my immediate future.  <sigh ... deep breath> It'll be exhausting and it'll be hard to lose so much time with the family.  But if I'm able to avoid travel mishaps, it'll be fun. Meet Me In St. Louis I'll be speaking in St. Louis, MO on Tuesday, September 14th for their mid-day meeting.  The details, as I have them, are: Tuesday, September 14, 2010 1-4pm Location: Microsoft St. Louis Office, Three City Place Drive, Suite 1100, St. Louis, MO … [Read more...]

Free Poster – SQL Server PerfMon Counters

You Needs It! You Wants It! We all know how hard troubleshooting SQL Server can be.  There are tools and techniques that can make troubleshooting much easier, such as the Windows System Monitor. The only problem with SysMon, or more commonly "PerfMon", is that it takes a lot of knowledge and experience to know which objects and counters to examine. I've put together a nice poster for you covering all of the important PerfMon counters for SQL Server troubleshooting, with a little help from some of my friends: Brent Ozar, Bob Ward, Christian Bolton, and Raoul Illyes. You Can Has It Fer … [Read more...]

Presentation: SQL Server for Oracle DBAs

Back in late May, my pal Buck Woody (blog | twitter) and I presented SQL Server for the Oracle DBA.  Buck played Jerry Lewis' role, while I played the straight man a la Dean Martin.  You can see the recording and slide deck here.  Since both Buck and I spent a considerable number of years working on Oracle, we felt like we had pretty good legs to stand on doing this presentation.  Here's the abstract: In enterprise IT, database professionals face a mixed-bag of platforms within their environments -- and the overlapping duties that go along with them. Whether you like it or not, you get … [Read more...]
