Sock Hoppin’

It was an incredibly crowded night at the elementary school for the annual sock hop. We loaded up the entire posse, all 3 Joslyn girls and 2 Kline girls, and headed out for some fun. It was pretty chaotic. But overall, everybody had fun. … [Read more...]

Coins

When I was a child of maybe 4 or 5, I got to participate with my dad in his coin collecting hobby. It was a lot of fun for me and a memorable way to learn how to count by 5's, 10's, and 25's. Despite the fact that it's been decades since I'd really done any sort of coin collecting, the experience always stayed with me as something enjoyable. It seemed like a sort of happy thing for a parent and a child to do, like fishing is for some families. So, on a whim, I bought a few coin collecting books while at Barnes & Noble with Rachel. They weren't anything special, just the latest books for … [Read more...]

So much to blog about and so little time

I'm sorry that I've fallen off the bandwagon. There's so much to do, but never enough time to do it.A couple things I'm thinking about right now are:Getting estimates from contractors on finishing one, if not two, unfinished rooms in the house. This is great because the unfinished rooms have always made the house feel, well, unfinished. I'll feel a certain emotional emancipation by having those rooms finished. It's like having a puzzle with a couple pieces not yet in place. Yes, it's a beautiful image, but it ain't finished yet.Maybe possibly potentially getting a new(ish) car for me. I … [Read more...]

A Great New Book for the Family to Read Together

Rachel bought me a most wonderful book as a Christmas present. If you have enjoyed books like Harry Potter or other family reading, then have I got a recommendation for you. Note, though, that this story is basically a period mystery set in late 19th century Paris. It doesn't have any supernatural elements to it, except for a sense of wonder and a charming story line.I've never encountered another book like this one. It's part story, part graphic novel - yet this book manages to use its multitude of beautiful black & white pictures to dramatically and tenderly advance the story.I've been … [Read more...]

Happy Holidays

This Christmas was really good this year. As is our tradition, the kids and I put up and trimmed the Christmas tree a few weeks before Christmas (12/10/07 to be exact). We had fun rediscovering all of the ornaments we'd stored away last year. And we listened to and sang Christmas songs while we hung them up.Picking out the stockings was a bit of mini-adventure too, since Katie had some preferences that made it kind'a funny and silly to accommodate.I had a huge amount of fun selecting the gifts for each of the kids and imagining how much fun they'd have with each of their presents. I've also … [Read more...]

The Braces are off and the bars & locks are going up!!!

Sometimes your kids don't understand that you simply HAVE to capture the moment, even if you have to take more pictures than you want to. In Emily's case, I'd take a couple pictures trying to show her last day in braces. But they didn't turn out too well. Consequently, her expression practically screams "Dad, please finish before I start hitting you!"Every now and then I look at my daughter(s) and see not my daughter, but a beautiful woman - a beautiful woman that other boys/men are staring at. Needless to say, all those males died bloody and horrible deaths at my hands, nostrils, or … [Read more...]

Fun in the Snow – Draper, Utah

Each year, I take the kids on an individual trip with dad. I try to make it inexpensive and unassuming. But the emphasis of these trips is always focused on communication, connection, and building good memories. This year, I was able to take Emily to go skiing in Utah. My only expense was flying her out, since my trip was on the tail-end of my PASS trip. And my good friend Joel Meyer very graciously provided a place for us to stay, food to eat, and great company. We were very fortunate to have great weather for the trip. It started snow the evening we arrived and, the next morning, we had a … [Read more...]

Holiday Crazy

There are have been a lot of things going on this last week. During the Thanksgiving holiday week, there was tons of work for me to do both on the job and at home. However, the kids made the work light and more fun. For one thing, Dylan's very cool rock band - No Name Nonsense - had a performance and they rocked the house. They played at the high school's Battle of the Bands and did an awesome job. Out of a dozen or more bands, they came in third. The winning band had some middle-aged guys in the band who could put thousands of dollars into their equipment. They also played, IMO, weird music … [Read more...]

Is this the face of a Murderer?!?

One of Emily's friends hosted a murder-mystery party where one of the guests did the "murdered" another guest and everyone at the party had to figure out who the murderer was based upon the clues that each guest brought with them.It you haven't guessed, the party was set in the 1920's and Emily was a flapper/cigarette girl. She was also a total knock-out. Hey, Emily, do me a favor and don't look so grown up, ok?Love ya,-Dad … [Read more...]
