Kevin,
You have done an excellent job on the NomCom Committee - difficult as it is. Additionally, your explanation of the process here is accurate, complete and well thought out.

Trying to define an elecions process which is fair, transparent, and yeilds the best PASS Board is something hard to do.

I would join with Kevin, in his call to action. If you have strong opinions, and wish to follow up - there is already an action item to review/alter the process for next year. Participate in the discussions which will lead to the process for next year.

Kevin, as has already been stated thank you so much for a clear, concise and candid look at the NomCom and the inner workings of PASS itself. If I may, however, comment on one thing. The lack of people putting their name in for PASS board might be due to the fact that as it stands the commitment to the board is something of a 10 year commitment (if I am incorrect in this understanding please correct me). I know there are folks out there who would love to do this but the time commitment is a killer. Perhaps PASS needs to take a look in the mirror this year and give itself a makeover. As you stated in your post many of the board have not embraced the Web 2.0 and this is definitely not a fad as more and more services and users rely on these technologies and methodologies. We have a long road ahead of us and I'm glad this year has sparked such controversy as this allows us to gauge:
1)How many people are really paying attention
2)Shed a light on some glaring problems that, prior to technologies/methods that allowed for transparency, were never seen outside of the board
As Kevin said this is a call to action for all of us.

Awesome post Kevin. There are always going to be people who disagree with what ever PASS does but hopefully this opens peoples eyes to the reality of what it takes or will take for PASS to be sucessful overall.

Great post, Kevin. I appreciate the way you've clearly articulated the goals of the NomCom and the direction that the BoD is taking; however, I still support Andy Leonard's approach that technical experience with SQL Server should be a requirement for Board members. It is certainly not the ONLY requirement, nor is it necessarily the most important, but it does help ensure that the BoD stays in touch with the community it is serving.

If, as in your hypothetical example, you have board member who don't know when to put down the technical hat and put on the business hat, I wouldn't say that you need less technically-skilled people but that you just don't have enough of the other skills to get the job done. Granted, that means that you need more people to apply for the position, and I think having a post like this which clearly lays out the nomination process will help with that.

I hope that we have this much interest next year (if not as much controversy); it's exciting, and I hope it motivates more of us (myself included) to become more active.

Thank you Kevin for not only taking the time that you did as President, Past-President, and Head of the Nominations Committee; not to mention the time you took here to educate the masses. There were many times I saw fallacies and misconceptions in the various items I read, but could not comment because of the NDA. I am glad that some of these things have now seen the light of day here. Thank you for enticing me to run for the Board and for being impartial in deciding that I was not at par, at this point in time and in these circumstances, with the other candidates. I hope if anything comes across in all the various discussions where my name has been raised, that I bear no ill will and look forward to working with whomever takes their place at the Board. See you in Seattle.
